FX says scripted shows hit record in U.S. this year

Is there just too much TV?

Maybe there is too much TV.

FX Networks said Wednesday that it counted 409 scripted shows that aired in the U.S. in 2015, nearly double the number from six years ago. That means a lot of competition for viewers, on traditional TV and online.

FX Networks CEO John Landgraf startled Hollywood earlier this year when he declared that there is "simply too much television." He said that this year or next would mark the peak.

"This is simply too much television. My sense is that 2015 or 2016 will represent peak TV in America, and that we'll begin to see declines coming the year after that and beyond," he said during the Television Critics Association summer tour.

FX counts scripted shows on broadcast channels like CBS, cable networks like AMC, premium networks like HBO and online operators such as Netflix.

The total doesn't include reality shows, news programs, sports events, made-for-TV movies, specials, daytime dramas or children's shows.

FX found 376 scripted shows last year. There were just 211 in 2009.
