Fragrant Fugitive: Suspect's cologne leads to capture
LEBANON, Ore. -- A suspect who drove away from a traffic stop at over 100mph eventually ditched his car and continued to flee on foot, hiding in the brush, according to authorities in central Oregon.
How did they find him? Apparently, officers picked up the scent of trouble - the suspect's cologne.
The Albany Democrat-Herald reports the driver eluded police in Linn County before dawn Sunday in a red Honda Prelude whose hood flew off.
Charles Agosto sped off during a traffic stop after a K-9 officer signaled the possibility of narcotics inside his vehicle, according to CBS affiliate KOIN. Lebanon police later saw his parked Honda and continued the search on foot.
That's when they picked up the scent.
Officers caught a "strong" smell of cologne" in the darkness, and found their man hiding in shrubbery.
Agosto, 35, was booked into the county jail on charges including felony attempt to elude, reckless driving and violating probation.
According to KOIN, after he was caught, Agosto told police he "regretted applying cologne to his person prior to leaving the house."
