Fourth of July reminder: Don't celebrate with gunfire

MIAMI, Fla.- Independence Day is a day for fun and fireworks, not for gunplay, Miami officials are reminding residents, reports CBS Miami.

At a Thursday news conference, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Miami-Dade Commissioner Audrey Edmonson asked the community to refrain from celebratory gun shots this Fourth of July weekend, pointing out that such activity is both unsafe and a crime.

The conference was part of the city's annual "One Bullet Kills the Party" campaign. Miami officials believe the message is worth repeating and that it is decreasing the number of stray bullets in the city.

CBS Miami reports that last year, a woman in Ft. Lauderdale was hit by a stray bullet while watching fireworks. April Johnson was sitting on the sidewalk in front of her brother's home with her one-year-old nephew on her lap when she felt a sharp pain in her left thigh. The child escaped injury.

Johnson doesn't think the bullet was fired by anyone around her at the time.
