Fla. widow gets life in prison for "revenge killing"

MIAMI -- A South Florida woman has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a man she claimed was behind her husband's fatal shooting.

A Miami-Dade judge gave 37-year-old Janepsy Carballo the mandatory sentence Wednesday right after a jury found her guilty of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors say Carballo lured Ilan Nissim, her dead husband's business partner, to her North Miami home in 2008 and then shot him in the back multiple times.

Carballo's attorney argued that Nissim attacked Carballo and that the woman was defending herself.

The Miami Herald reports that Carballo's husband, Orlando Mesa, a suspected drug dealer, was gunned down outside their home a month before Nissim's fatal shooting. Carballo suspected Nissim was behind her husband's death because the men had been in a dispute over a real-estate deal.

Carballo said her husband had given Nissim $180,00 for a real estate transaction, but the money was later stolen, reports CBS Miami.

Prosecutors said Nissim had nothing to do with the murder, reports the station.
