Florida police kill man chasing, shooting at his wife
EDGEWATER, Fla. - Florida police shot and killed a man who they say shot his wife and was chasing her while continuing to shoot at her, reports CBS affiliate WKMG. Gary Johns, 65, died in the New Year's Day altercation at his home in Edgewater, Florida.
According to Edgewater police, officers were called to Johns' home and when they arrived heard a gunshot. They then saw a woman run from the home screaming, pursued by Johns, who was firing from a handgun as he gave chase.
The two officers then opened fire, shooting Johns, who was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Johns' 58-year-old wife was shot in the chest, but is expected to survive, police said.
Sgt. Adam Burris and K-9 Officer Samuel Epitropoulos have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
Burris has been with the agency since 2012 and was the Officer of the Year in 2014. Epitropoulos has worked for the Edgewater Police Department since 2014.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
