First look: Jared Leto as the Joker in "Suicide Squad"

On Wednesday, "Suicide Squad" director David Ayer shared the first photo of the film's cast at a table read, but one star was noticeably absent -- Jared Leto, who plays the Joker.

Not to worry, though. Ayer followed up a day later with the first glimpse of Leto (and his shorn locks) as the famous villain.

The pic, shared on Twitter, shows a green-haired Leto posing behind a camera -- an homage to an illustration of the character from the Batman graphic novel "The Killing Joke."

"Suicide Squad," also starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne and Viola Davis, opens in theaters on Aug. 5, 2016. Check out their cast photo below:
