Father turned in daughter in Joliet, Ill., murder case

CHICAGO - The father of a suspect involved in what Joliet, Ill., police have called one of the most vicious crimes they've ever witnessed, says the day he turned her in was "one of the hardest days of my life," reports CBS Chicago.

Bill McKee is in court every day while his 20-year-old daughter, Bethany - one of four people accused in the 2013 murders of 22-year-olds Terrance Rankins and Eric Glover - stands trial for murder.

"It was one of the hardest days of my life thus far. It's a day I will never forget," the suspect's father told reporters Thursday. He was referring to the day in January 2013 when Bethany allegedly called to say she and three others were involved in the strangulation murder of Rankins and Glover.

"I asked her over and over again, 'Are you serious?' I couldn't even fathom that this was going on," McKee said.

According to the station, prosecutors portray Bethany as the mastermind in a robbery plan that escalated into the double murder. On Thursday, co-defendant Alisa Massaro testified that "Bethany suggested calling Terrance... because he probably had money."

Bethany's father said Massaro's testimony is questionable. The 22-year-old agreed to a plea deal to avoid a life sentence in the case.

In court, Massaro said Bethany suggested calling her dad for advice on how to cover up the crime.

After getting the phone call, McKee said he immediately called police.

"My mind was racing with a million thoughts," McKee said. "I didn't want Bethany to get caught up any further into it."

McKee is now taking caring of his daughter's three-year-old girl. A judge is expected to rule in the murder trial sometime next week.
