Fast-moving wildfire engulfs at least 75 homes in Texas Panhandle

Wildfire destroys dozens of homes in Texas panhandle

A wildfire, still out of control Monday, has burned dozens of homes in the Texas Panhandle.

The fire broke out near the town of Fritch, north of Amarillo. Thousands of people are out of their homes.

At least 75 homes have been destroyed and approximately 1,500 acres of land have burned since the wildfire sparked late Sunday afternoon, CBS News' Omar Villafranca reported.

Authorities haven't been able to fully assess the situation.

"We don't know the extent of the damage," Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Chris Ray said. "We don't know if they're completely burned, partially burned. We just haven't been able to get in there to evaluate."

The primary goal for first responders was to evacuate home owners. More than 2,000 people have been impacted by the fire. No loss of life has been reported.

Schools in the Fritch area will be closed Monday as fire crews from all over the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico work to put out the fire, which is currently 75 percent contained.

There's no word yet on what started the fire.
