Facebook introduces Ebola donation button

Earlier this month, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Pricilla Chan, donated $25 million to help fight Ebola. Now, Zuckerberg is making it easier for Facebook users to do their part.

The social networking site announced Thursday it's adding a "Donate Now" button, to allow users to easily give money to one of three charities involved in the fight against Ebola -- International Medical Corps, the American Red Cross and Save the Children.

The Ebola outbreak has infected more than 13,500 people in West Africa and has killed nearly 5,000, yet charities have raised significantly less money for the cause than other recent relief efforts. The AP reports that the American Red Cross has raised nearly $3.7 million for Ebola, whereas it received $486 million after the Haiti earthquake and more than $88 million in the aftermath of last year's Typhoon Haiyan, in the Philippines.

"For Facebook users in 34 countries, this initiative provides a simple and desperately needed way to donate to the worst Ebola outbreak in history," said Carolyn Miles, president and CEO of Save the Children, in a statement.

International Medical Corps will use donations to train thousands of frontline health workers, to support its 70-bed Ebola treatment unit in Bong County, Liberia, and to establish three other treatment centers in Liberia and Sierra Leone. The four centers will give more than 1.5 million people access to care.

The Red Cross and Save the Children both have response teams in the hardest-hit countries, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
