Employee at zip line attraction in Utah falls to death

KANAB, Utah -- An employee at a zip line attraction in southern Utah has died after trying to help a rider land safely on a landing deck.

Authorities say 54-year-old Darrell Wayne Gilley died Tuesday. It was his second day on the job at Kanab Zipline.

Kanab Police Chief Tom Cram says Gilley had been helping riders land when one rider approached the deck too quickly and bounced back up the line. Gilley reportedly grabbed the rider to try to secure him but ended up being pulled about 100 feet from the deck.

Gilley lost his grip and fell from 150 feet above the ground. Bystanders tried to administer CPR on Gilley but were unsuccessful.

The zip line rider was uninjured.

Utah's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
