Emmy Awards 2016 nominations by the numbers

At this point, it probably comes as no surprise that HBO earned more Emmy nominations than any other network -- but just how many more the premium cable company nabbed is still startling.

HBO led the Emmy nominations derby for TV networks the 16th straight year -- and it has led cable networks in nominations for 25 years. This year, the 23 nods the network received for "Game of Thrones" helped it reach its total of 94 Emmy nominations.

The closest contenders -- FX and Netflix at second and third -- couldn't come close, with 56 and 54 nominations, respectively. At least FX's limited series "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" gave "Thrones" a run for its money, bringing in only one fewer nomination, with 22.

And while HBO's tally is impressive, it's a bit of a drop from 2015, when the cable giant earned 126 nominations.
