Emmy Awards 2016: Julia Louis-Dreyfus dedicates historic Emmy Award to late father

Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ record-breaking Emmy Award on Sunday was undoubtedly bittersweet, as she mourned her father, William Louis-Dreyfus, who died on Friday.

The “Veep” star won Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for the fifth year in a row, making her the actress with the most wins in the category. Louis-Dreyfus also won the award for her role in “The New Adventures of Old Christine.”

As she accepted the award, the actress joked, “I’d also like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate. I think that ‘Veep’ has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started out as a political satire, but now feels more like a sobering documentary. So, I certainly do promise to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it.”

But the mood soon turned sober as she talked about her dad, who died at 84.

“I’d like to dedicate this to my father William Louis-Dreyfus who passed away on Friday,” she said as she teared up. “I’m so glad that he liked ‘Veep’ because his opinion was the one that really mattered. Thank you.”
