Driver arrested after following motorcade onto White House grounds
A man was arrested Tuesday for attempting to drive through a security checkpoint at the White House, according to the U.S. Secret Service.
The driver was attempting to follow a motorcade carrying the Obamas' daughters, Sasha and Malia, the Secret Service said. He was stopped by Secret Service officers after the security checkpoint to the White House at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
He was identified as 55-year-old Mathew Evan Goldstein, according to Edwin Donovan, a spokesman for the Secret Service.
Goldstein was arrested and charged with unlawful entry, according to Donovan.
He was in possession of a pass that allows him to enter the Treasury Department, which is next door to the White House.The Secret Service told CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett that he cooperated during his arrest and had nothing on his person that was suspicious and his vehicle was clean. The Secret Service is trying to figure out why a Treasury Department pass holder would be confused about protocol on Pennsylvania Ave., which has been closed to traffic in front of the White House since 1995.
