Poll wrap: Trump leads by 2 points in one; Clinton up 6 in another
Donald Trump leads Hillary Clinton nationally by 2 percentage points in a CNN/ORC poll released Monday while Clinton leads Trump by 6 percentage points in a NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll.
The CNN survey found Trump leads Clinton 45 percent to 43 percent with 7 percent backing Libertarian Gary Johnson and 2 percent supporting Green Party candidate Jill Stein.
A similar poll conducted by CNN/ORC in early August found that Clinton led Trump by 8 percentage points at the time.
The new poll found 49 percent of independents support Trump while just 29 percent support Clinton. Sixteen percent support Johnson and 6 percent support Stein.
Half of voters -- 50 percent -- said that Trump is honest and trustworthy while only 35 percent said that same of Clinton. More voters said they trust Trump on the economy and terrorism while Clinton has the edge on foreign policy. The poll found the public is divided on who would best handle immigration.
The CNN poll surveyed 886 registered voters between Sept. 1 and 4 with a 3.5 percentage point margin of error.
On the other hand, the NBC/SurveyMonkey poll found 48 percent of voters said they support Clinton, compared to 42 percent who back Trump, which is the same margin as last week’s poll. In a four-way race involving third-party candidates, Clinton leads Trump 41 percent to 37 percent, also unchanged from last week. Twelve percent support Johnson and 4 percent support Stein.
The NBC survey polled 32,226 adults who said they are registered to vote between Aug. 29 and Sept. 4 with a 1 percentage point margin of error.
