How Belgians responded when Donald Trump called Brussels a "hellhole"

Is Donald Trump being smart or childish for snubbing debate?

Donald Trump may have won over Vladimir Putin, but he's offended England, Scotland, Germany (or Chancellor Angela Merkel, anyway), and now, Belgium.

When Trump called Brussels a "hellhole" earlier this week, residents of the Belgian capital were quick to respond. In an interview with Fox Business on Tuesday, Trump was asked how realistic it would be to institute his proposed policy to block all Muslims from entering the U.S.

"There is something going on, Maria," he said. "Go to Brussels. Go to Paris. Go to different places. There is something going on and it's not good, where they want Shariah law, where they want this, where they want things that -- you know, there has to be some assimilation. There is no assimilation. There is something bad going on."

"You go to Brussels -- I was in Brussels a long time ago, 20 years ago, so beautiful, everything is so beautiful -- it's like living in a hellhole right now," he added.

While it's true that parts of Belgium have been a hotbed for terrorism recruiting, Brussels is a major European city that is home to NATO and it's the capital of the European Union. It's also a popular tourist destination, known for its architecture, chocolate and waffles, among other things.

Trump's comment about the city inspired quite a backlash on social media, with Brussels denizens using the hashtag #hellhole, to defend their city.

A Brussels alderman, Geoffroy Coomans, called him a buffoon on Twitter, and said he'd campaign against him.

Many posted picture-perfect scenes of the city, showing it to be anything but a #hellhole.

And there were other responses, too.
