Cops: Boy, 10, shoots dad during dispute between parents

DETROIT - Detroit police say a 10-year-old boy shot and wounded his father during a dispute between his parents.

Officer Jennifer Moreno tells The Detroit News that police responded at around 3:30 a.m. Monday to a home on the city's west side. Moreno says the boy fired one shot from a handgun that struck his 33-year-old father, who was involved in a domestic assault with the boy's mother.

The father was taken to a hospital, where police said he was initially listed in critical condition.

CBS Detroit radio affiliate WWJ-AM reports that the boy was interviewed by police and told them the gun went off accidentally while he was trying to protect his mother. The Wayne County prosecutor's office is expected to review the case to determine whether any charges will be filed.
