Defense secretary fires senior military adviser due to alleged misconduct

Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced Thursday that he has removed his senior military assistant, Lieutenant General Ron Lewis from his position due to allegations of misconduct.

Carter did not elaborate on the natured of the alleged misconduct, but he said he has referred the matter to the Inspector General of the Department of Defense for investigation.

"I have confidence in the Inspector General's ability to determine the facts," Carter said in a statement. "The Department of the Army will then take action as appropriate."

He added that he expects "the highest possible standards of conduct from the men and women in this department particularly from those serving in the most senior positions. There is no exception."
