David Oyelowo on first Thanksgiving as a citizen

This Thanksgiving is a special one for actor David Oyelowo, who became a U.S. citizen this year.

The U.K.-born star of “Selma” and the upcoming “Queen of Katwe” told Kevin Frazier and Keltie Knight on CBS’ “Thanksgiving Day Parade” of his Thanksgiving plans.

“Our traditions begin now,” he said. “We became citizens this year so this is our first time truly celebrating it. We’re going to have a nice big meal today and our tradition will start today.”

Frazier pointed out that while most people can pronounce “Oyelowo” the same way the actor does, Oyelowo’s father’s pronunciation is totally different. The actor said he doesn’t expect anyone to pronounce his last name in an authentic Nigerian accent.

Watch the video above to see Oyelowo impersonate his father pronounce both his last name and “Oprah Winfrey,” which is apparently very difficult for him.
