Dallas attorney dies in shootout at luxury apartment

DALLAS, Texas - A prominent Dallas attorney was killed by police after a shoot-out at his luxury apartment building early Sunday morning.

CBS DFW reports that according to Deputy Chief Gil Garza, Michael Edward Schmidt told an employee at the Glass House that his apartment was being burglarized. The 47-year-old lawyer then reportedly barricaded himself on the ground floor and opened fire on officers after police arrived, according to a building employee.

Garza told the station that officers retreated and took cover, while attempting to speak with Schmidt. But Schmidt reportedly advanced on the police, who then returned fire, killing him.

Sources told CBS DFW, Schmidt was taking off his clothes and stripped down to his underwear during the incident.

Schmidt’s 11-year-old daughter was reportedly in the apartment at the time of the shoot-out. According to CBS DFW, Schmidt was recently divorced and has four children.
