Dad who left son with fatal injuries after car crash gets 4 years

SAN DIEGO - A man who abandoned his 4-year-old son following a Southern California freeway crash, leaving the boy bleeding on a roadside with injuries that proved fatal, has been sentenced to four years in state prison, reports CBS affiliate KFMB.

Angelo Fabiani, 41, was convicted of hit-and-run causing death.

In her closing argument, the station reports that Deputy District Attorney Marisa Di Tillio said Fabiani walked away from the June 2013 accident after unlatching a seat belt that was holding the child's car seat in place, sending him headfirst into the concrete below. The boy was declared brain-dead eight days later.

Fabiani testified that he left the scene because he couldn't bear to see his bloodied son, whom he thought was already dead.

For two days following the accident, Fabiani didn't call police or check on his son's condition, Di Tillio said. According to KFMB, Fabiano went on a dating website and talked with friends and family members on Facebook about getting across the border into Mexico, Di Tillio said. The prosecutor said Fabiani was arrested as he made plans to meet a friend who had agreed to drive him into Mexico.

Fabiani reportedly has four prior DUI convictions and was also arrested on suspicion of DUI while out on bail in his current case.
