DA: Woman who tried to cut out fetus from Bronx woman to stand trial
NEW YORK -- Ashleigh Wade, 22, was arraigned Tuesday after being found psychologically fit to stand trial for the fatal stabbing of a pregnant childhood friend in November, according to the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
Wade has been indicted on two counts of second-degree murder, kidnapping and criminal possession of a weapon charges in the fatal November stabbing of pregnant childhood friend Angelique Sutton, 22.
Wade is accused of stabbing Sutton multiple times on Nov. 20, and slashing her in the abdomen in order to remove a nearly-full-term baby from her womb, according to the Bronx DA.
Detectives said they found a knife and placenta in the building when they responded to an emergency call by the suspect's boyfriend. She was taken into custody while screaming that the baby was hers, police said.
Wade's newborn baby girl was delivered in good health just moments after the bloodshed, but Sutton later died of her injuries, according to police.
Sources told CBS New York after the incident that Wade and Sutton had been friends in elementary school and allegedly reconnected recently on Facebook. Police also said that the victim and suspect had dined together and shopped for baby items in the days prior to the attack.
But when Sutton went to Wade's Bronx apartment, "she was greeted with a knife," according to a statement from the Bronx DA's Office. Wade remains in custody with no bail and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The case was adjourned until April 5. If convicted of all charges, Wade faces up to 50-years-to-life in prison.
