NEW ORLEANS --The man suspected of shooting a Tulane medical student is in custody and has confessed to the crime, according to the New Orleans police chief.

New Orleans police and U.S. Marshals arrested 21-year-old Euric Cain around 11:30 Monday morning at a home on Delechaise Street in New Orleans after a manhunt, reports CBS affiliate WWLTV. Cain gave a full confession to a detective, New Orleans police chief Michael Harrison said at a Monday afternoon press conference.

Cain will be charged with armed robbery, second-degree kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder, police say. There were two females inside the home where Cain was arrested, and one - his girlfriend, 17 - will be charged as an accessory to the crime, Harrison said.

Police say the Tulane student, 25-year-old Peter Gold, was coming to the aid of a woman who was apparently being mugged by Cain early Friday when Cain shot Gold.

Surveillance video released by police shows a man dragging a woman toward an SUV, and Gold pulling up and trying to help her.

Police say the man demanded money and shot Gold when he said he didn't have any. A misfire apparently foiled an attempt to shoot him in the head.

The woman was treated for minor injuries.

Tulane spokesman Keith Brannon says Gold's family said Sunday that he's improving but remains in guarded condition.

"We're going to find you, we're going to prosecute you, and you're going to spend the rest of your life behind bars," New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said at a press conference alongside NOPD before the shooting suspect was located.
