Cops: Va. police sergeant burned with caustic substance in "unprovoked" attack

NORFOLK, Va. -- A police sergeant in Norfolk, Va. was seriously injured Monday morning after a suspect thew a “caustic substance” into the sergeant’s face, authorities say.

According to Norfolk police, the sergeant was approached by the suspect around 10 a.m. and the suspect threw the unknown substance. The sergeant was transported to the hospital with “what appears to be significant burn injuries,” police say.

Police are describing the incident as “unprovoked.”

The suspect was taken into custody. Police aren’t releasing his identify until charges are issued.
