The shooting happened just after 1:30 a.m. in a subdivision northwest of the city of Fairburn, Georgia. The suspected shooter, Ammanuel Menghesha, allegedly shot and killed Officer Terence Green, a more than 20-year veteran of the police force, according to the station.

Officials say officers arrived after a 911 call about a man who had fired shots inside a home. Police learned that the man -- identified as Menghesha -- had left the home and that he may have been intoxicated, reported WCGL-TV.

Officers began to search for the shooter and nearly 45 minutes later, more 911 calls came from another part of the neighborhood. Rushing to investigate, the officers came under fire without warning, according to Fulton County Assistant Police Chief Gary Stiles.

After Green had been struck, police officers fired back -- striking Menghesha. Green was rushed to a local hospital and died there, reported the station.

The suspect was also taken to the same hospital, but his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.
