Cops: Man, 79, attacked bride, 73, in dispute over checkbook

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - A 79-year-old man is accused of trying to injure his 73-year-old wife in a dispute over a checkbook, reports CBS Miami.

Police in South Florida say the Hallandale couple has been married for 8 months.

The woman was sleeping in their apartment when her husband, Luis Ames, woke her up and accused her of stealing his checkbook, authorities say. When the wife denied it, Ames allegedly took his gun out of a dresser in the bedroom and hit her over the head with it, causing a laceration.

The woman tried to run away, but Ames allegedly followed her and shot at her. Ultimately, the wife was able to escape and contact police, says CBS Miami.

Police said they found a bullet-sized hole in a ceiling.

Two witnesses gave statements consistent with the victim's account of the incident, authorities say.

Ames was taken into custody and so far faces one charge of crimes against a person.
