Cops: Daughter leaves disabled mother in hot car for 16 hours

WASHINGTON -- A Washington, D.C. woman has been charged with criminal abuse and neglect after allegedly leaving her disabled mother in a car for 16 hours.

Police say 29-year-old Teresa L. Channelder reported early Tuesday that her car and her 63-year-old mother were missing. Channelder told police she had left her mother in the vehicle about seven hours earlier while she went into a store.

After police began searching for the vehicle, a detective followed Channelder on Tuesday afternoon and saw her walk to the car. Police say they found her mother in the car, suffering from dehydration and extreme sweating. She was also sitting in urine and feces.

Channelder was then taken into custody and released pending a hearing scheduled for Aug. 7. She was also ordered to stay away from her mother.
