Ohio police: Gunman who fired shots targeted officers

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police in Columbus, Ohio were fired upon with a "high-caliber" firearm overnight, but none were injured, reports CBS affiliate WBNS.

Officers were called to an apartment building just before midnight Wednesday on reports of shots fired. When they arrived they noticed bullet holes on several vehicles, as well as the exteriors of two apartments.

While officers investigated, an unknown person opened fire on police, they said.

A Columbus police helicopter and SWAT team were called in to search for the suspected gunman. No suspect has been apprehended as of Thursday afternoon.

On Thursday, Columbus Police Sergeant Richard Weiner said officers were targeted in the attack and they are now on high alert.
