Colin Farrell joins "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"

Colin Farrell is leaving behind "True Detective" for something magical.

The Irish actor has joined the cast of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter spinoff "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie, which also stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller and Alison Sudol, finds Farrell in the role of Graves, a wizard that Newt Scamander (Redmayne) meets in New York.

Newt Scamander is a "magizoologist" whose story begins in New York City, 70 years before the events of the seven "Harry Potter" books.

"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is expected to land in theaters on Nov. 18, 2016.
