Police: Conn. coach left 4-year-old son home alone

TRUMBULL, Conn. - Police have charged the head coach of the boys' basketball team at Harding High School in Bridgeport with leaving his 4-year-old son home alone while he went to a gym to work out.

Police said Charles Clemons Jr., 40, of Trumbull was arrested after a neighbor called police on Friday, September 19.

The neighbor said the Clemons' child came to her door wearing pajamas and said that his house was on fire, reports CBS Connecticut.

Police and fire officials responded and determined that there was no fire. However, the alarm had been activated, and that's what caused the child to run to the neighbor's house, the station reported.

The child gave the neighbor his father's phone number. Police said that's how they contacted him.

According to CBS Connecticut, Clemons told police he left the child home so he could go to the gym. Police said the incident was reported to the Department of Children and Families.

The Connecticut Post reports that Clemons was charged with risk of injury to a minor, and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the charge.

Clemons was released on a promise to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on September 30.
