Charges against "Orange is the New Black" actress dismissed

NEW YORK -- Assault charges have been conditionally dismissed against an "Orange is the New Black" star who was accused of punching and scratching a teenage girl.

The charges against Dascha Polanco will be dismissed if the 33-year-old actress stays out of trouble for six months.

Polanco was accused of assaulting Michelle Cardona inside Polanco's upper Manhattan apartment last summer.

The Manhattan district attorney's office says Cardona has agreed to the conditional dismissal of the charges.

Polanco denied the assault allegation, and her lawyer, Gerald Lefcourt, called the accusation an extortion attempt.

Lefcourt says Polanco is "delighted" to be able to put the matter behind her.

Polanco plays inmate Dayonara Diaz on Netflix's "Orange is the New Black."

She also played the title character's best friend in the movie "Joy," starring Jennifer Lawrence.
