Officials: Thieves targeting beehives ahead of almond season

OROVILLE, Calif. -- Officials warn that hundreds of beehives have gone missing around Butte County, reports CBS Sacramento.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office says more than 500 beehives were reported missing, according to the station. Similar thefts reportedly occurred at the beginning of almond pollination season last year.

A Colusa County beekeeper reported that 240 hives were stolen a week ago, according to CBS Sacramento. Deputies also say a Butte County beekeeper reportedly had 280 hives stolen.

The thefts appear to be happening at night, according to the station. Investigators reportedly believe other beekeepers could be responsible for the thefts.
