Brazen robbers targeting Aurora ATM customers

AURORA, Colo. - Numerous bank customers have been held up at gunpoint recently by robbers stalking ATM customers in Aurora, Colo., according to CBS Denver.

Police say the suspects approach their targets as they're withdrawing cash from the machine, and in some cases, the station reports, the suspects follow the victims home before robbing them there.

"These victims are being robbed at gunpoint," said Officer Diana Cooley of the Aurora police.

Here's the m.o.: As victims try to get cash from both drive-up and walk-up ATM's, a stranger approaches them and demands they hand over the money.

Aurora police say if the person using the ATM is a man, then two suspects go in for the cash. But if the victim is a woman then there's only one robber, and that suspect doesn't make his move at the ATM.

"Our female victims, after completing a transaction at the ATM, are being followed home, and at that point a suspect comes out and robs them..." Cooley said.

According to CBS Denver, in every case police say the suspects have been able to get away with an undisclosed amount of money. The ATM robbery spree started on Dec. 23, say police.

Nobody has been hurt so far, but there's concern that could change.

"Make sure to just be aware of their surroundings when they're at ATMs, or really in their daily routine," Cooley said.

Police say one of the suspects is believed to be Hispanic, about 5-foot-6, 160 pounds and possibly driving a dark sedan.

Anyone with information in the cases is asked to call Detective Brandon Rinnan at 303 739 6112. Tipsters can also call Metro Denver Crime at (720) 913-STOP (7876). They may also text their tip to 274637 (CRIMES) and the use the title DMCS and then their message.

Tipsters may remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
