Brawl avoided at Berkeley, Calif. high school

BERKELEY, Calif. - Police swarmed the Berkeley High School campus in California Wednesday after staff reportedly got word of a brawl between students that was planned for after school, reports CBS San Francisco.

School officials say the officers showed up to prevent a fight similar to one that took place between Berkeley High School students last spring that fanned out from the school to downtown in the Northern California city. Video of that brawl wound up posted online.

Students say it's become a cycle at the school. The most recent fight broke out just three weeks ago, reports the station.

"There are little flare-ups, definitely. I think it's also definitely worsened by social media, because word gets out and there tends to be more of a buzz," Berkeley High student Julia Kim told CBS San Francisco.

This time, administrators caught wind of the buzz about the fight, which was slated to take place Wednesday between students at Berkeley High and students from a school in Oakland.

"We had some credible reports of possible violent situations that might happen around the campus, either around lunchtime, or at the end of the day," Berkeley Unified School District Spokesman Mark Coplan said.

While the fight never materialized Wednesday, authorities still detained two teens who said they came to the campus for a fight. An Oakland man with a replica gun was also arrested, reports the station.

Students say they were relieved the fight was avoided, but say they are unsure about how effective added security will be in the future.

"I mean, it's not always gonna work. It worked today," one student said.
