Bon Appetit's tips on becoming an Instagram food star

Bon Appetit on America's culture of food

Eating is no longer just about what's on the plate - it's become a lifestyle.

In its first-ever cultural issue, Bon Appetit magazine looks at how cuisine has "become cool" in American culture, thanks in large part to the smartphone technology, said editor-in-chief Adam Rapoport.

"It's more inclusive than exclusive. It used to be that you had to be a foodie," Rapoport told "CBS This Morning" Tuesday. "I can know what the best food bloggers and writers in the world - where they're going and where they're eating."

Social media and the Internet has also eliminated geographic barriers. You can easily search what chefs around the globe are cooking and also get to know them on a more "intimate level than ever before."

"Chefs also become superstars but they don't necessarily have to be on the TV show in the traditional way they did 10 years ago," Rapoport said.

You can also become your own Instagram star. Rapoport suggests you follow these tips when shooting food:

  • Use natural light
  • Capture the image directly overhead
  • Edit with extra filters, but not too much
  • Post no more than once a day
  • Don't stage the picture
  • Quality over quantity

"You want it not to look like one of those fake magazine covers from back in the day," Rapoport said.
