Bodies of missing man and his grandson found in Arizona

GILA BEND, Ariz. -- Authorities have found the bodies of a man and his 12-year-old grandson who had been hiking in central Arizona.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's office says the two had been hiking in a mountainous desert area near Gila Bend, about 50 miles southwest of Phoenix.

The department says the bodies of 63-year-old Thomas Gillespie and Robert Miller were found on Wednesday night. Officials are determining a cause of death.

A search began after a woman called officials Wednesday afternoon to report her father and son hadn't been heard from since Tuesday morning.

The manager of the hotel where the two were staying said he believed they were going to hike and take pictures in an area known as the Mormon Battalion Trail, CBS affiliate KPHO reported.

Their vehicle was found on State Route 238, which cuts through the Maricopa Mountains.

Shortly before midnight, Hegstrom confirmed that the bodies of Gillespie and Miller had been found, MCSO spokesman Chris Hegstrom said.

No other details were immediately available.
