Bob's Blog: The world in disorder -- What to do now?
(CBS News) --Headlines this week have been dominated by the rising threat from ISIS and the crisis in Ukraine. As Western leaders convene at the NATO summit in Wales, It feels like the world in unraveling.
Militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, known as ISIS, beheaded a second American journalist this week, a horrifying move that has put new pressure on President Obama to take action. He and British Prime Minister David Cameron have encouraged their colleagues to form a coalition to confront the threat in the Middle East - a threat that could spread to Europe and to the US homeland.
Fighting continued this week in Eastern Ukraine between the government and Russian-backed separatists, but a deal reached Friday might pave the way for a cease-fire. We'll see if it holds out - President Obama said at NATO that both sides must "follow through" on the agreement.
One man who has been dealing with foreign policy for more than four decades will be on the show: Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. We'll get his thoughts on a range of issues, including the new fight against ISIS, the turmoil in Ukraine and nuclear negotiations with Iran.
Dr. Kissinger just wrote a new book called "World Order," which addresses the history of how nations develop. His writing also discusses the ongoing quest to find an equilibrium where we can all live together. The world is in kind of disorder now, and he has a lot to say about it.
The breadth of his knowledge is just astonishing. People often ask me who is my favorite person to interview is, and there are many of them, but Dr. Kissinger is definitely at the top of my list.
Sen. Marco Rubio, the Florida Republican who sits on the Senate Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committees will also be on the show to talk about ISIS, Ukraine and much more. So will Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, the Maryland Democrat who serves as the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee.
