Bob's Blog: Rising tensions at home and abroad

We've had a full week of news - from clashes in the Middle East to tensions boiling over right here in the U.S. over illegal immigration - and we'll be covering it all this Sunday on "Face The Nation."

Overseas, the situation in the Middle East is unraveling on multiple fronts. After a series of kidnappings and murders in recent days, Israelis and Palestinians are once again fighting in the streets. And in Iraq, the terrorist group ISIS continues to threaten the Iraqi government and has declared a state of its own that stretches from Iraq into eastern Syria.

We'll have two top foreign policy leaders on the show, two Republicans who just came back from a tour of the region: Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham. They went to Kabul, Afghanistan, to meet the two presidential candidates, Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani. McCain also ventured to the Syria-Turkey border to visit moderate rebels who are fighting against both ISIS and the Assad government.

Also on the program Sunday will be Sen. Dick Durbin, the Senate Majority Whip from Illinois. He served alongside McCain and Graham last year in the "Gang of Eight" that tackled immigration reform. He'll surely have something to say about the dim prospects for immigration reform and the humanitarian crisis growing on the border and encapsulating communities like Murrieta, Calif., as we saw this week.

Finally, we have something special for you on this Independence Day weekend. If you're looking for something good to read this summer, you'll want to tune in. We have a panel of novelists, including "The Director" author David Ignatius, "Mean Streak" author Sandra Brown, "Cop Town" author Karin Slaughter, "Personal" author Lee Child and "The Skin Collector" author Jeffrey Deaver. We'll talk about their mystery novels, their favorite recent reads and much more.

Hope you'll tune in on Sunday. Check your local listings. And happy Fourth of July!
