Bob Dylan manuscript could yield millions of dollars

"Like A Rolling Stone" transformed the career of Bob Dylan.

The song marked a moment in history when the artist made the transition from folk to rock. But owning part of that piece of history will likely come with a hefty price tag.

Sotheby's is auctioning off the hand-written final draft of the legendary tune. The four pages of lyrics, revisions, notes and even doodles could make this the most expensive hotel stationary in the world. The manuscript is expected to fetch anywhere between $1 million and $2 million.

"When you look through the four manuscripts, you see numerous edits and changes," said Richard Austin, head of Sotheby's Books and Manuscripts Department. "Bob Dylan manuscripts are incredibly sought after. Not just because of his role as a rock icon, but also he's now seen as a serious poet."

Dennis McDougal, author of "Dylan: The Biography," says Dylan changed the language of music. He even compares these lyrics to Shakespeare.

"The lyrics are phenomenal," McDougal told CBS News. "What he did in terms of the shear poetry of that song has never been duplicated. How much would you pay for an original working draft of King Lear?

In 2004, Dylan sat down with the late Ed Bradley on "60 minutes" and reflected on his songwriting during the 60's.

"I don't know how I got to write those songs," Dylan said. "Those early songs were like almost magically written."

The 6-minute song was ranked the greatest song of all time in 2011 by Rolling Stone magazine, and has remained a staple at concerts, the musician closing each performance with the classic hit.
