Bob Dylan lashes out at critics while accepting award

Bob Dylan gets candid in award speech

Bob Dylan criticized his critics Friday as he accepted the 2015 MusiCares Person of The Year award. Although he thanked his many supporters over the years, as well as other artists who made cover songs of his work, he also took shots at those who have said unkind things about him.

"Some of the music critics say I can't sing. I croak. Sound like a frog. Why don't these same critics say similar things about Tom Waits," said Dylan to audience laughter.

"Critics say I can't carry a tune and I talk my way through a song. Really? I've never heard that said about Lou Reed. Why does he get to go scot-free? What have I done to deserve this special treatment?"

His 30-minute acceptance speech mentioned certain detractors by name, and challenged the reasoning for their criticism. But he also praised MusicCares itself for the help the organization gives to people in the music business who have fallen on hard times.

"I think a lot of this organization. They've helped many people. Many musicians who have contributed a lot to our culture."
