Boat outing turns tragic for group of adults and kids

A boating accident at a Utah lake claimed the lives of four of the seven people on board, authorities say, including three juveniles.

Authorities said there was a "very violent" wind storm in the Bear Lake area when the boat overturned. The group was engaged in an outing with the Sport Nautique craft used for wake boarding and surfing.

Officials say the group was in the frigid 53 degree lake for anywhere between three and five hours.

"We got called on an overdue boat with seven people in it," said Rich County Sheriff Dale Stacey Monday night. "Eventually the boat was found turned over. Had a bad wind storm and all seven people obviously were dumped out of the boat."

CBS News affiliate KUTV in Salt Lake City reported the ski boat capsized Monday while carrying an adult man and woman, several teen girls and a seven-year-old girl. Two of the girls and the woman were hospitalized. Three other girls were also taken to a hospital, but later died. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The boat was brought back to dock around 12:30p.m. on Tuesday. Officials worked to drain water from it.
