Massachusetts man dies after shoveling snow, mayor says

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -- New Bedford's mayor says a 53-year-old city man died after shoveling snow during this week's blizzard.

Mayor Jon Mitchell said at a news conference Wednesday that the man suffered a "cardiac event" while shoveling snow on Tuesday night. Mitchell says the man apparently had a pre-existing heart condition.

The man's name was not made public.

City Emergency Medical Services Director Mark McGraw acknowledged that "there was probably some delay" responding to the call about the man given road conditions. The city received about two feet of snow.

He said city EMS crews responded to 136 calls from Monday evening through early Wednesday morning.
