Billy Crystal, Josh Gad to star in new FX series

Billy Crystal is coming back to television.

The funnyman will star in a new comedy series with Josh Gad.

"The Comedians"

will air on the FX network next year. Crystal and Gad will play two comics in a generational clash.

FX said Wednesday it has ordered 13 episodes.

"The Comedians" is based on a format popular in Sweden and will look at a late-night television show on which egos and generations collide. The pilot episode was directed by Larry Charles, who worked on "Seinfeld" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Crystal, 66, has been well known for movie roles -- lending his voice to the recent "Monsters University" -- a "Saturday Night Live" stint, and repeated turns as Academy Awards host. His last role in a regular TV series was back in the late 1970s and early 80s, in the ABC sitcom "Soap."

Gad, 33, is best known for his work on Broadway in "The Book of Mormon," and for performances in films like "Jobs" and "Frozen."
