The 10 best beach movies to catch

From Sandra Dee to Keanua Reeves, Hollywood stars have been making waves at cinemas for decades.

Whether it's "Gidget" or "Point Break," there seems to be a beach movie for everyone. We've compiled a list of the top 10 greatest films in the genre that have withstood the sands of time.

Some notable selections, like 1980's "Blue Lagoon" and 2000's "The Beach," were left off the list because, well, they weren't very good. Perhaps due to the challenges involved in shooting around remote and exotic locations, most films with beach settings haven't exactly been hailed as artistic masterpieces.

"Point Break," likewise, isn't "Citizen Kane," but it's one of those over-the-top films that has managed to become an international cult hit over the years. Other entries on our list, such as 2000's "Cast Away," made the cut for crafted performances and poignant story-lines.

In addition to "Gidget," a couple of other classics had to be included, like the "Frankie and Annette" selection "Beach Blanket Bingo" and the timeless documentary "The Endless Summer," which was released in 1966 with a theatrical poster that can still be seen in college dorms around the country.
