Baby's remains missing from Mississippi graveyard

TUNICA COUNTY, Miss. -- A Mississippi family said they were shocked recently when they discovered a ditch at the grave site of their baby daughter, reports CBS affiliate WREG.

Amanda Reed told the station she and her family regularly visited the gravesite of her baby girl, Heaven Sent Reed, who died nine years ago. But when they arrived on Tuesday the grave and remains of the stillborn baby were gone.

"It feels like a dream. You know how you just wake up to a nightmare, and you never come out of it?" Reed said.

The Tunica County Sheriff's Office is investigating and the cemetery's owner, Christopher Thompson, said county employees may be to blame.

Neighbors said they spotted workers at the cemetery last week digging as part of a county effort to prevent flooding.

But even if they dug where the baby was buried, it's not clear what happened to her remains. County leaders didn't respond to a request for comment from the station.
