Avril Lavigne causes a stir with "Hello Kitty" video

Avril Lavigne is causing a bit of a stir ever since releasing her new video for the song "Hello Kitty."

In the clip, Lavigne -- surrounded by candy -- wears a cupcake tutu as she sings alongside Asian dancers, plays air guitar and drinks sake.

The song, co-written with Lavigne's husband Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, appears on the pop star's self-titled album, released last year.

The 29-year-old Canadian singer told CBS News about the songwriting process, citing "Hello Kitty" as one of her favorite songs on the album: "Sometimes it was three songs a day, one song, two songs, 14 hour days and I didn't really think about it. I wanted it to be very natural. And my favorite songs on this album are the songs we wrote really fast -- 'Hush Hush,' 'Hello Kitty,' 'Bad Girl.'"

Not everyone, though, is thrilled with the video treatment for "Hello Kitty," with some calling it "racist" and an embarrassment.

The video no longer appears on YouTube but is still on Lavigne's website. Go here to check it out.
