Avril Lavigne and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger separating

Avril Lavigne and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger are calling it quits after more than two years of marriage.

Lavigne announced the news Wednesday on Instagram: "It is with heavy heart that Chad and I announce our separation today. Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we've created many unforgettable moments. We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other."

She ended the post with: "To all our family, friends and fans, thank you sincerely for the support."

Lavigne, 30, and Kroeger, 40, married in France in July 2013. The pair got engaged in August 2012 after six months of dating. They also collaborated together on the music side of things.

Kroeger co-wrote and produced some of the songs on Lavigne's fifth studio album, released in 2013. He also guested on the single, "Let Me Go," and appeared in the accompanying video.

"I feel like he really believes in me. He's very encouraging and because he's also a singer and a performer I feel like he's different than your average producer and we can kind of tap into something different together because of that. There's a different type of understanding," Lavigne told CBS News at the time.

It was the first marriage for Kroeger and the second for Lavigne. She filed for divorce in 2009 from Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley after three years of marriage. Whibley just remarried over the weekend, exchanging vows with girlfriend Ariana Cooper in Beverly Hills, California.

Lavigne, meanwhile, has been very open about her recent struggle with Lyme disease, telling People magazine in April, "It felt like having all your life sucked out of you."
