Autopsy: Ga. mayor died of self-inflicted gunshot

CLARKESVILLE, GA -- Clarkesville Mayor Terry Greene died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to preliminary findings from an autopsy conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner, reports CBS affiliate WGCL.

Greene, 53, was elected mayor of the town, which is about 85 miles northeast of Atlanta in Habersham County, in 2005. He died on Sunday, according to a hospital spokeswoman, after an officer found him on the floor of his home, shot in the head.

GBI began the investigation into the shooting, which authorities said happened during an alleged domestic dispute between Greene and his wife, Anne, according to the station.

Greene was a physician who, prior to becoming mayor, had also served on the city council and the planning and zoning commission. He and his wife had four children.

The investigation is ongoing, according to WGCL.
