Austin cops raid home, find grow room full of psychedelic mushrooms

Illegal mushroom-growing operation busted

AUSTIN - Investigators serving a search warrant in a residential neighborhood uncovered a grow house with a room full of psychedelic mushrooms.

Austin police Thursday raided the house - which CBS affiliate KEYE reports is just around the corner from a daycare and an elementary school. Investigators wore hazmat suits as they carried boxes of the illegal drug out of the house.

Sgt. Robbie Bolk with the Austin Police Department says "mushrooms, when you disturb them they emit a spore and if you breathe that in, they can cause you to have health issues and sometimes it could be fatal."

Police also say some of discarded drug was tossed in the backyard, an area close to the daycare.

In all, police found nine ounces of dry mushrooms and 25 to 35 pounds of wet mushrooms. The drugs have a street value of about $250 per dry ounce. Police are waiting for the wet mushrooms to dry before they can determine how to charge the case. So far, no one has been arrested, but police say they do have a suspect.

The landlord of the house told KEYE that the tenants were quiet and paid their rent on time.
