Assisted living facility cook raped resident, 78, police say

MANDEVILLE, La. -- A cook at a Mandeville assisted living facility that cares for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia has been accused of raping a 78-year-old female resident.

The Mandeville Police Department said in a news release that 58-year-old Jerry J. Kan was arrested Monday on a charge of first-degree rape.

Investigators say Kan had sexual intercourse with a resident in her room at Beau Provence Memory Care and Assisted Living on Aug. 21. Kan resigned from his job two days later. He had been there since April.

Police spokeswoman Becky White says investigators believe it was an isolated incident.

Beau Provence said in a statement that it’s cooperating with police and the state Department of Health and Hospitals in their investigations.

It’s unclear whether Kan has an attorney.
