Arrest in slaying of Mass. mom found dead on beach

SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. -- Police have arrested a man in Virginia in connection with the murder of a Massachusetts mother who was found dead on a beach north of Boston in January, reports CBS Boston.

Jaimee Mendez, 25, of Swampscott, vanished Nov. 6 after calling friends and saying she was with a man in Lynn and wanted to leave. When her friends arrived, she was gone. Swampscott and Lynn are adjoining suburbs of Boston.

"She said, 'Listen, I'm on this street I'm with this guy, he's making me really nervous, I want to get out of here,'" her sister, Alyssa Mendez, told CBS Boston around the time of Jaimee's disappearance. "[Her friend] went to go pick up her up, she never showed, and her phone was off. That's the last anyone ever heard of her."

A search of an industrial area in Salem uncovered her jacket, cellphone, a charger and ID, and her sneakers and men's clothing were found in a dumpster in Lynn. Her remains were found on Swampscott's King's Beach in January.

Jason Fleury, 37, was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Hampton, Va., after a grand jury issued an indictment on Friday charging him with murder, the station reports.

Fleury is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday and is expected to be transferred back to Massachusetts.

"This has been a long and painstaking investigation, with a single goal: justice for Jaimee Mendez," District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said in a public statement.
